Contest Winners Announced

Time is running out to join another of my Save Second Base/K Cancer contests.  Contest closes tomorrow morning!  That prize is a Jose Berrios clear acetate autographed card.

Last Wednesday the contest for writing a post about your favorite sports movie ended.  Only 2 people entered.

After the first time, John is still on top.

And after the second time, John is on top again.
Congrats to John from the blog John's Big League Baseball Blog.  John will be receiving this Tyler Glasnow autographed pink card.

Both Anthony Rendon and Corey Seager smacked 44 doubles over the regular season while being members of a National League team.

That means I had to use the tiebreaker rule and see who struck out less in the 2019 season.

Anthony Rendon struck out 86 times over the regular season while Seager struck out 98 times.

There were quite a few people who selected Rendon to win the Troy Tulowitzki pink card.

I put Matt, John Sharp, Mrbasepauly, and Captkirk42 into the randomizer

After 4 times, Matt was on top!

Beating The Odds: Contest Winnings From PTown Tom

Tom of the blog Waiting Til Next Year held his annual Card of the Year contest AND I CAME IN LAST PLACE!!!

SWEEEEEEET!!!!

That earned me a blaster of 2019 Topps.

Tom included a nice note to say thank you for participating in his contest.

Blasters of Series 1 are a yearly tradition for me, but I haven't grabbed any 2019 Topps yet mainly because I went batsh*t crazy buying cards in December.

I really like the design of this year and from what I have seen the color parallels this year look really great.

My first 2019 Topps card is

A fantastic image using a throwback uniform of an American League team I can easily root for.

My first Pirates card of 2019 is a rookie card of Nick Burdi.  Burdi was selected in the 2018 Rule 5 draft by the Phillies then trad3d to the Pirates during the Winter Meetings.  He spent most of the year recovering from Tommy John surgery.  He will need to spend the entire year with the Pirates or they will lose him to waivers.  He will likely pitch out the pen this year.  If he fails the Pirates just resigned old friendly face Francisco Liriano to a minor league deal with incentives.

I could tell that there was something thick in the blaster pack.  I beat the odds by pulling a 1:44 relic of future Hall of Famer, Albert Pujols.

I love the look of these 1984 relics.  This would be a fun set to put together.

I got a few insert cards too.  Among them were a pair of Gleyber Torres highlight cards, an Eric Hosmer 1984 card, and a Mike Trout/Hank Aaron Greatness Returns card.

I got one parallel, an Alex Colome "150" parallel.

I'm Bad At Gambling

With sports betting now being legal in NJ, I think I should come clean with something.

I am bad at gambling.

I have incorrectly used 9 Home Run challenges cards of Andrew McCutchen on days he failed to hit a homerun including all 3 games he played in his return to Pittsburgh.

The cards cost me $3 to $5 each so that was roughly $40 wasted.


Fortunately, there was still hope.  I negotiated and over paid to get one of only 7 of the cards that people correctly guessed when Cutch hit one of his three homers in April.

These cards are incredibly sharp looking in hand.

The seller provided the card in the Topps Now packaging.

So after having a feeling that Cutch would hit a HR in his last 3 games played and missing on each one, what do you think happened yesterday?

Cutch went yard of course. 

First Grand Slam, 8 RBIs = Another Contest Winner

Last night Andrew McCutchen hit his first career grand slam.  It was career home run #202.  As I stated in a previous post I will continue to send out free cards for anyone who guessed a game he would hit a HR.

Sport Card Collectors guessed that Cutch would hit #200 on September 26th, but instead it was #202 and #203.  I am placing a COMC order this week and will be adding some cards for your collection based on your needs.

So how do I celebrate Cutch's first career Grand Slam?

How about a new 1/1 on bat auto?

This is my latest autograph from 2017 Immaculate.  It has been 5 years since Cutch signed anything but stickers for Topps and Panini.  I'm hoping that Topps could get Cutch to sign some more products, because as great as these Panini autographs are, nothing beats licensed products.

When I saw this 1/1 appear, I knew I had to add it to the collection.  It's one of the most expensive cards I have added, but once it arrived I can say it was worth every penny.

Cutch should be getting the Topps Now treatment today with his performance last night.  I might need to pick up a few depending on what the card looks like.
