Yellow? Yellow? Is this thing on?

On yesterday's post where I shared a bunch of blue cards on a Monday, Johnny's Trading Spot made a comment about having a hankering for yellow cards coming on.

I wasn't sure if he meant yellow cards

Or the band Yellowcard

since I did show a music video in yesterday's post.

I can only assume (and you know what that can sometimes mean) that he actually meant yellow cards.

Yellow has been a part of Topps color palette since they began with 1951 Topps Red Backs card game pieces.

The card game pieces featured a yellow and white background behind a red diamond and a black and white photo of the player.  They would be used to play a game of baseball using the cards.  This 2015 version of Andrew McCutchen features a triple by the 2013 MVP.

Topps would continue to use yellow as a strong background color choice in multiple sets in the 50s and 60s.

This 1958 style is a 2019 Topps Archives card.  I have a few different border parallels of this card, but this particilar copy is the base, which I received for free at the September 2019 Philly Card Show where I met McCutchen.

Many more sets over the years would feature yellow, but my first experience with yellow in the card design was a 1986 Rick Rhoden.

The first set I collected was 1987 Topps, but my first packs I had were 1986 Topps.  The Pirates had a yellow name printed atop the card.

There were supposed to be parallels of this 2014 Archives card produced as several other players that shared this design also got a gold foil parallel.  A quick google search and you will see that NONE have ever been sold on eBay, COMC, or sportlots in 6 years.


The most BOLD yellow card I have is this 2018 Topps Heritage High Number

This card is based on the 1969 Collector Cards Jumbos.  The back is very plain and boring.

I have shown off the 2017 Topps Heritage Bright Yellow back parallel in the past.

These are very rare Short Printed cards, but not nearly as rare as the SSP Gray Back from 2017 Heritage

Topps has produced baseball cards for nearly seven decades.

Like many other printing processes from those days they have used printing presses that utilize printing plates to create the images.  There are four colors used to create each of the baseball cards we love and enjoy.  The colors are black, cyan, magenta, and yellow.

Here are 8 of my yellow plates.  I currently have 26 yellow printing plates of Andrew McCutchen.

Of all the plate colors, the yellow is my least favorite.  Often times the yellow plates create the faces to look like zombie versions of themselves.

Crisis Week: Supergirl

I have always been a bigger Marvel Comics fan than DC Comics fan.  The X-Men (and all the other X books), Iron Man, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Darkhawk. These were all comics I loved to read growing up.

It wasn't until I was an adult did I really get into reading DC Comics.  Now don't get me wrong, I loved Batman as a kid, but I never bought a single issue of Batman to read until I was in my 20s.  As I matured more into adulthood I really grew towards The Flash.  The stories written by Mark Waid and Grant Morrison made me realize what an incredible life Wally West had lead from teenage speedster to the superhero who would forever have to live with the mantle of "your uncle saved the entire universe".

Similar to Marvel's Cinematic Universe crafting stories spanning a decade across over 20 live action movies, DC Comics Superheroes will be facing a universe event beginning this week when the tv shows Supergirl, Arrow, Flash, Black Lightning, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow kickstart an event loosely based on DC Comics' Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The event will feature characters from past TV shows and movies as all the DC Comics Universe tries to create (or destroy) all the universes and meld them into one.  We will see for the first time on screen in over decades characters from Smallville, Birds of Prey, Tim Burton's Batman, Superman Returns, Wonder Woman, the original Flash TV series, Supergirl the Movie, etc all appear.  Even the voice of Batman: The Animated Series, Kevin Conroy, will be appearing.

It is going to be epic.

And I will be watching.

The event kickstarts tonight on Supergirl.

All week long I will show a card of Andrew McCutchen relating to this big event.

In 2016 Topps produced an insert set to mirror the 1969 Topps Supers.

The stoic pose really makes this card look like Cutch is a hero overlooking his city, or in this case, the backfields of Bradenton, Florida.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Visit the official site here.

Breast Cancer will be detected in one of eight women in the US each year.

It is the second leading cause of cancer death among women each year.

On average every 2 minutes a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer and every 13 minutes one person will die from breast cancer.

There are currently 33 million breast cancer survivors in the USA.

It's important to support the research for cancer.  Breast Cancer is often associated with the color pink so I will be showing off some pink Cutch cards....all month long.

In addition, you can expect to see some boobs with each post.  Who doesn't love boobs?

So let's start with what we're hoping to save!

One of my favorite sitcoms is Friends.
A big reason for that is Jennifer Aniston.

When I was in grade school, I had such a big time crush on Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston.

A look at her perky nipples through the years should help to explain that reasoning.

Like a finely designed card, she has aged very well.

Even the backside is still stunning.

This year's Topps Heritage design is based on 1969 Topps, the same birth year as Jennifer Aniston (see there was a reason why I showed her off).

Let's flip the card over and discover that Magenta/Pink back.

These magenta backs are EXTREMELY RARE as they were limited to only 10 copies and fall roughly 2 per case. 

Aaaaaannnnnddd...let's take one more look at Jen's fine bod.

Screw The Rules, I Have Money

Something I am kind of ashamed to admit is that I still watch the anime Yu-Gi-Oh fairly often.  Back in 2004ish I participated in locals with my deck.  I won a bunch of matches, but never took my poker skill set, deck building ideas, and knowledge of eBay deals to take my king of games mentality even more.

My friends and I even cosplayed as the original cast and I built authentic decks for each of us based on the characters.

Over the years there have been many fan dubs which are both silly and stupid.

One of my favorites is by a guy who calls himself lilkuriboh and he made a viral meme with Seto Kaiba saying "Screw the rules, I have money"

This fit the character perfectly as he was always getting the latest cards to try and stop his arch enemy, Yugi Mutou.

When I saw this 2018 Heritage coin card pop up for sale, I immediately thought of this saying.

That right there is a genuine 1969 nickel.

Now to get back on the topic of YuGiOh, I am so confused by all the new rules and haven't actually played since around 2007 when the X-Sabers were first being released.  Now that ArcV is on Netflix I am watching it and have to say I am enjoying it quite a bit.  The characters are very interesting and I am curious where the arc (pun unintended) will lead.  If I had to rank the series it would be this order: 5Ds, Original, ArcV, GX, zexal.
