Chicks dig the long ball

Who remembers that commercial with Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine talking about how "Chicks dig the long ball"?

Well if you forgot it, you can check it out on YouTube here.  Tom Glavine recollects the making of the Nike commercial.

I was watching a game earlier this year and the score was tied up with no outs in the 8th inning with a runner on second.  The top of the lineup was up.
A few things could have played out.
The defense could have intentionally walked the guy up at plate to potentially get a double (or triple) play in order.  This didn't happen and the defense chose to just attack the hitter.

Now the hitter could have chosen to lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the guy on 2nd base to 3rd base with one out.  This would almost certainly cause the infield to play in on the grass opening more possibilities for the number 2 hitter in the lineup to manipulate a base hit OR hit a sacrifice fly OR let a ball get pass the catcher for the guy on now 3rd base to score.  The ability to score a run from 3rd base with 1 out and your number 2 and 3 hitters up seems like an easy way to push across a run and put your team ahead.

Do you think that happened?

Nope.  The guy up at the plate was an All Star with high contact rate, but tried to hit a HR in a selfish manner.  He didn't.
He lined out.

1 out. Runner still at 2nd Base.

The team's number 2 hitter is up at the plate.  He's a rookie.  He struck out on a ball in the dirt that briefly got away from the catcher.  Throw down to 1st.

2 outs.  Runner on 2nd didn't advance.

The team's number 3 hitter is up, also an All Star.  Fly ball, deep in the outfield.

Caught.

3 outs.

Runner on 2nd stayed there, stranded.

The team gave up the lead in the bottom of the inning and would go on to lose the game.

In a game with the 3 true outcomes (walk, strikeout, HR) grows more and more each year we are seeing teams play small ball less and less.

Is it because chicks dig the long ball or is it because analytics and the moneyball way of thinking no longer values a productive out?

Not surprisingly the number of sacrifice bunts in 2021 is down per game compared to a decade ago.  Also not surprising is that 13 of the top 15 teams that do sacrifice bunt are National League teams and are often pitchers attempting to lay down a sacrifice.

The 2 teams not in the top 15 that are National League teams?

The last place Miami Marlins (0.15 bunts per game) and Pittsburgh Pirates (0.13 bunts per game) both bunt the least for National League teams.

Go back to 2011 and the Marlins were bunting 0.55 (most in majors) and the Pirates were bunting 0.46 times per game.  The team with the fewest sacrifice bunts in 2011 was the Boston Red Sox at 0.14 sacrifice bunts per game.

The furthest back I can go is 2007 based on the research I was able to do and the Colorado Rockies were sacrifice bunting 0.50 times a game.  They are also leading the majors this year with 0.31 times per game.  The 0.31 times per game in 2021 would put them in the lower half of the 2007 statistics and lumped in with many of the fewest bunts among American League teams.

The art of bunting is nearly gone from baseball.

I miss small ball and seeing action and strategy on the base paths and defense.

When Andrew McCutchen broke into the majors in 2009 he was a force on the base paths stealing 20-30 bags per season during his first 5 years.

There were even times that Cutch would attempt to lay down a bunt for a base hit.

The last time Cutch was successful with a sacrifice hit was in 2011.

There was an insert set in 2012 Topps Opening Day called Elite Skills

The 25 card insert set features various skills from the game of baseball.  Oddly enough, Cutch is featured as the bunting skill.
The back of the card talks about how the elite athlete gets ready to lay down a bunt for a potential base hit.

What are some of your favorite baseball commercials?

It's Opening Day!

Happy Opening Day!!!
Above is the Opening Day Stars insert from 2018 Topps.
They were released in Series 1 packs and came in 4 additional color parallels (blue, black, gold, and red)
I am still on the hunt for the red /10 and gold /50.
What are you most excited about seeing from your favorite players and teams this season?

For me, I'm excited to see a full season of of Ke'bryan Hayes and some of the Pirates prospects make their debuts for a glimpse of the team's next core of promising players.

For Cutch, I am excited to see him return to being a great leadoff hitter in a stacked Phillies offense.

Altered Reality

It has been a LONG TIME since I looked forward to a new episode of a TV show each week.

I never got into Walking Dead or Game of Thrones when they were being released.  I tend to binge watch TV shows.

The last TV show that I watched week after week while it was still airing was the TV show, Lost.  The last season was something only an Astros fan could appreciate (it was trash 🗑), but everything leading up to that season was fun and entertaining.

I recently got hooked on the Disney+ TV show, WandaVision. I have always been a fan of comic books and especially the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

The first two episodes were very slow and boring.  The episode that came out last week...helped bridge Marvel movies under the 20th Century Fox banner to the Disney movies and TV shows.

I'm really excited to see what today's episode will bring.  It should feed on some alternate reality ideas hinted at previously.
Spring Training is only a few days away so this 2016 Opening Day insert card called Alternate Reality seemed appropriate for today.  It features players wearing alternate jerseys instead of traditional home whites and road greys.

3D or DDD: Another Save Second Base Awareness contest Preview

Congrats to AJ of the Lost Collector for winning the first Save Second Base preview contest for the year.

With October being next week, I wanted to continue to spread the awareness early so I am doing a Blog Bat A Round style contest as I continue to give out some really cool prizes for interacting with me over the course of the next 5 weeks as I hope to help SAVESECONDBASE.
This blog bataround contest will close at 12:01AM October 1st so you have about a week to get your posts ready.

What do you have to do for the contest?
It's fairly simple, show off some 3D cards (because who doesn't love DDD when we're trying to SaveSecondBase).  Leave a comment below with a link to your blog post.

On October 2nd I will randomize the valid entrants into random.org and randomize it 3 times.

The winner will be the name on top after the 3rd random and will win this On Card Autograph of Kelly Brook.
It is from Inkworks Smallville card series and pictures Kelly portraying Victoria Hardwick, Lex Luthor's girlfriend in Season One.

Why am I asking for 3D cards to win this Kelly Brook autograph as another SaveSecondBase prequel contest?
She played a character called Danni Arslow in the 2010 creature feature Piranha3D.

Plus, not to be rude, but those have to be at least DDD...

Anyway, here are a pair (Oh the puns are coming out today) of Opening Day Stars 3D cards of Cutch.
I tried to capture the 3D look, but the scanner and my phone just can't showcase it the way I want.

Share your 3D cards!

I want to see everything from Sportsflics to Kelloggs 3D to Dennys Holograms to recent Topps online exclusive 3D cards like they did in 2018 and 2019 and everything in between.
It doesn't have to be baseball either, share your nonsports cards, your basketball/football/hockey/racing/wrestling/tennis/etc cards.

Show the power of the Triple D, I mean 3D!

Today is Opening Day (shortprints)

Today would have been Opening Day for all MLB teams.  Things have changed a lot since I started counting down to this day 3 weeks ago.  The economy is in turmoil.  Many people are working from home or have been temporarily laid off.  Sports entertainment has been non existant with the suspensions of MLB, NCAA, NHL, and NBA seasons.  Toilet paper has been trending on twitter daily.

The picture of the world we live in today is radically different and that is why today I am going to show off all my photo variants of Andrew McCutchen on Topps Opening Day cards.

Opening Day began making photo variant cards in 2013.  They featured a few members of the 2012 World Series Champions San Francisco Giants along with a few "big name" players who changed teams in the 2012 off-season.  Those cards mostly featured the players at press conferences and included guys like RA Dickey (remember when the Blue Jays traded Travis d'Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard for him?), BJ and Justin Upton, Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton, and James Shields.  The following year (2014) Topps began using photo variants for the 25 most popular players among collectors.

My Eleanor. (Gone in 60 Seconds reference).  This card eluded for a few years until Nathan from Bucs Stop Here hooked me up with it for a bountiful of cards I sent his way.

This sliding catch of Cutch is one of my favorite images ever on a piece of cardboard.  The odds of pulling this card from a pack of 2014 Topps Opening Day is 1:222 packs or 1:65 jumbo packs.  The blue parallel of 2014 would be the last time that a color parallel gets numbered on the back.

The 2015 Opening Day photo variant features Cutch in the on deck circle at PNC Park with the beautiful city of Pittsburgh as the backdrop.  Retail odds for 2015 Opening Day variants were 1 in 2,375 packs and hobby odds were 1 in 307 packs.
****I still need the purple parallel for the rainbow****

2016
The 2016 Opening Day photo variant features Cutch with the Roberto Clemente Award that he won in 2015.  Odds of pulling one of these are 1 in 393 packs.

2017
The 2017 Opening Day Photo variant of Cutch features him in a throwback 1979 uniform.  Odds of pulling a photo variant is 1 in 256 packs.
****I still need the base for the rainbow****

2018
2018 would be the end of Cutch's appearance in Opening Day (he didn't make the 200 card set for 2019 or 2020) so naturally it ended the streak of his 5 straight years of photo variants.  It's fitting that it features an image of him hitting his first Grand Slam of his excellent career and ultimately his final homestand at PNC Park.  The joy on his face as he celebrates the homerun is one of the many reasons he became such a fan favorite in every city he played in, but especially in Pittsburgh.  Pulling a photo variant in 2018 Opening Day is a tough pull as these fall 1 in 477 packs.
****I still need the base for the rainbow****

And Here are the identification codes on the back so that you can determine if you have a SP photo variant.

The top card is a standard photo card.
The bottom card is the code for the photo variant.

Cards Without Rhymes

Prior to the Coronavirus outbreak I picked up a pair of 2014 needs for a very cheap price.

Coincidentally they feature color parallels that are difficult to get true rhymes with.
The 2014 Opening Day purple was an exclusive to Toys R Us packs.

The 2014 Topps Orange is a factory set exclusive.  These are very rare because most factory sets remain sealed and those that are opened only contain 5 cards of the 660 card set to be the orange exclusives.
McCutchen along with Kershhaw, Cabrera, Trout appeared on the cover of the box set for the 2014 Factory Set.  I still want to get one of those for my collection.  Sealed factory sets are ranging in the $100+ market.

A 1/1 Challenge Or Something Else?

In case you don't follow me on Twitter (@CollectingCutch) I have been posting only 1 of 1 cards for the past 10 days.

I was wondering if I could post a 1/1 on here each day that I've never shown off here until Opening Day.

My question is would that be too much or should I spread them out over the course of the season.

With about 4 weeks until Opening Day, I think I could do it....

by showing off cards like this 2017 Gold Label Class 3 Gold Parallel 1/1

...OR...

Something that may be more challenging would be to count down the days until Opening Day by showing the card's actual card number in the set
Like this 2011 Topps Opening Day #27

...OR...

I could do something similar to my Serial History posts and just focus on the Serial Prefix number
Like this 2011 Topps Chrome #8 card serially numbered 27/50
It is the Gold Parallel 27/50.

So in the comments below, please tell me how you think I should count down the days in March until Opening Day

I Got My Eleanor

Holy $#*+!

After 5 years of coming close to landing this SP photo variant of Andrew McCutchen's 2014 Topps Opening Day release I have finally gotten it in hand.

Nate from the blog Bucs Stops Here hooked me up with this unicorn like card.

I told Nate this card was akin to Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds to me.  I had come close on two occasions to acquiring it, but could never actually get it in my hands.

A day went by while he searched to verify he did in fact have the card.  I sat patiently waiting, not knowing what it would be like to actually get possession of this card I have coveted for 5 years.

Then I got this...
Nate being a class act didn't even hold me hostage for the outlandish price that I was offering to get this card.
I sent Nate a package in return for the card and also sent $50 PayPal for the finder's fee.  He claimed it The Most Epic Trade
The link will show sime of the highlights. Below is what I sent him to open.

Here are the variant, base, and blue parallel

The photo variant has a code of 8969
The base is  8491

Thank you for the card Nate.  I am so glad I can finally cross this card off the needs list. I'm glad you enjoyed the package I sent you.
Man I am pumped about having this in hand finally after all these years.
Wooooooo!

Scripture Sunday Corinthians 15:33

It's Opening Day weekend!!
The above relic card is from 2017 Topps.

Corinthians 15:33
Do not be misled, bad company corrupts good character.

I chose this verse because a coworker of mine recently confided in me that he has been struggling with an addiction.  I was proud to hear that he has chosen to correct this beast that he wrestles with and that he has already relieved himself of the company he had once kept.  Hopefully that is the start of good things to come for him.  I will keep him in my prayers and pray that he gets some good spiritual advice to no longer need that addiction in his life or to be tempted by those he once called his, friends.

Opening Day Inserts

With Opening Day starting tomorrow for 28 teams, I thought I could show off a pair of Opening Day inserts from a few years ago.

Topps used the same picture for the Opening Day Stars and Alternate Reality inserts.

Toys R Us purples

For the better part of the past decade the retail exclusive parallels have been known as fun ways to draw the hobby to the masses.  Sometimes these exclusives are so rare that go for mega bucks.  Look up the 2011 Topps Update Target Red Mike Trout for proof.

One color parallel that will likely no longer be a retail exclusive is the Toys R Us purples.  With this 2018 Opening Day purple, it's safe to say this will be the final Toys R Us purple exclusive of Andrew McCutchen in a Pirates uniform I will be adding.

I think in the coming years player collectors will have a hard time tracking down the TRU purples and they could command a big buck for star players especially rookie years.

Home Opener!

For the first time in 5 years I am not attending the Pirates home opener.  The Pirates came off a successful series in Detroit where they swept the Tigers.

They enter today tied for first place with the Brewers.

Jameson Taillon will take the mound at PNC Park to face off another interleague series, this time against the Twins.

It's going to be strange seeing former MVP, 5xAll-Star, 4xSilver Slugger, Gold Glove Winner, and all around good community leader Andrew McCutchen not patrolling the outfield at PNC Park this year.

But thanks to this 2018 Opening Day Diamond Relics I can always have a piece of PNC Park in my collection with Cutch on it.

The odds of pulling these is 1:7,722 packs.  That means that on average if you gave every fan in attendance at Pirates games this year a pack of Opening Day to open, only 2-3 would be pulled.  Yup, I suspect attendance will be that bad this year.
The card has a Fleer look to it.
