Sketch Sunday

I mentioned that one of my goals was to add some original art and oversized pieces to my Cutch collection and through the Twitterverse I stumbled across @soxsketcher who does 8x10 sketches of athletes using only a sharpie marker.  It's absolutely awesome!!!  In case you can't tell by his twitter handle, he is a Chicago White Sox fan, but his art is stunning no matter the subject matter.  

Knowing that I would be requesting a commission of Cutch and his art style really lends itself to Black and white images, I requested that Cutch wear a Pirates alternative black jersey.

He crushed it!!!

He Draws Baseball Cards

If you like baseball cards (and I'm sure you do) you should be following  @mosley_mark on Twitter

He goes by I Draw Baseball Cards and he shows off some really fun cards almost daily.

I recently got in a pair of cards that Mark drew for me.

The one where Cutch is reading a Black Panther comic is an original design obviously.  Cutch is a big Black Panther fan as evidenced by his Instagram post stating he found vibranium to make his knee heal and was seen wearing a Black Panther mask inside the Giants dugout.

The 2014 Design is based on the 2014 Topps Chrome photo variant (which sells in excess of $80 by the way).

I put it side by side with the original.

The back of each card has Mark's signature along with a stamp and original marking.

How fun is that?

Any wannabe artists out there want to tackle drawing my favorite base card of all time?

Send me an original hand drawn card size pocture of McCutchen's 2005 Update Draft Pick card and I will reward you with goodies.  Digital printouts of something you do on Photoshop type platforms are also accepted.  Keep the cards to the standard baseball card size though. 

Drawing Inspiration

I haven't been in the blogging mood much since New Year's Eve mostly because my grandfather on my mom's side of family had a stroke.  This came shortly after my mom had a stroke a few weeks ago.

I try not to get too personal on the blog, but please keep my family in your prayers.

I am going to show off a one of a kind sketch I received just before the holidays.
The original art has been in draft mode for awhile and I am trying to draw some inspiration for staying upbeat.

Brad Utterstrom who you may remember from drawing a pair of commissioned Topps Museum Masterpieces sketch cards here and here recently pulled a 1/1 of Andrew McCutchen and reached out to me.

He recorded the box opening on YouTube which you can view here.

A few days after reaching out, I had the oversized box topper original art in my possession.

It is pretty awesome in person.

I don't have any of the produced cards yet.
They'll be on my list one day, some day, just not today.

The Art Gallery Expands

A few weeks back I showed off an original piece of art by Mayumi Seto which was used to produce the 2017 Topps Gallery base card for Andrew McCutchen.

Since then I have added another original to the collection. (Well 2 more to be honest, but more on that in a future post).

This year the Wal-Mart exclusive set featured an insert subset based on the 1965 Topps design.  The two previous years since relaunching the brand in 2017 had sets based on 1951 Bowman and 1952 Topps.

This is the card as it was released by Topps.  These fall roughly one per 1.5 packs.

The 1965 design, like so many other older sets, has appeared recently in other sets that recycle old designs for current players.  The 2014 Topps Heritage design is based on 1965 Topps and I have shown that off a few times on here.  Even though Cutch didn't appear in the 2019 set, there was a 9 card #TBT online set released using the 65 design also.

Topps did a nice job recapturing the look and appeal of the original 1965 set.

I've seen a few others of Louise Draper's originals and they are awesome.

The Living Set

Mayumi Seto.  Her name appeared on this blog about two years ago when I got my 2,000th unique Andrew McCutchen card.  You can revisit that post here.  Since then I've added another 500+ cards to the collection.

Mayumi is most famous for being the artist of Topps The Living Set

As noted a few years ago she also worked on Topps Gallery in 2017.

I purchased the original art used to produce the retail exclusive set.

This is one of three original art production cards I own.  Below you can see the card produced from the original artwork above.

There is a few more of these originals out there and I am trying to negotiate to get a 4th.
